Why this skill matters

In GCSE Geography, you are not only tested on what you know. You also need to show that you can use evidence, spot patterns, explain causes, and make judgements about real places and issues.

This skill appears across all three papers: physical geography, human geography, fieldwork and issue evaluation. It is especially important in longer answers, where you need to move beyond listing facts.

Strong geography answers usually follow this chain: question → evidence → explanation → judgement. You are trying to show what is happening, why it is happening, how reliable the evidence is, and what conclusion can be drawn.

What is a geographical enquiry?

Definition

Geographical enquiry

A geographical enquiry is an investigation into a question about places, processes, patterns or issues. It uses evidence such as maps, data, fieldwork results, photographs, graphs, written sources or case-study knowledge.

A good enquiry is not just “find out about Lagos” or “study rivers”. That is too broad. A good enquiry has a clear focus, so you know what evidence you need.

For example:

  • Too broad: “Coasts”
  • Better: “How has coastal erosion affected people at the Holderness Coast?”
  • Stronger: “To what extent has coastal erosion created social and economic impacts at the Holderness Coast?”

The strongest version asks you to make a judgement, not just describe facts.

Definition

Judgement

A judgement is a reasoned decision based on evidence. In geography, this often means deciding how important, successful, severe, sustainable or reliable something is.

Example

Turning a topic into an enquiry

  1. Start with the broad topic urban change in Lagos, Nigeria. This is too large because it could include population growth, housing, transport, services, employment and inequality.

  2. Choose one geographical issue within it: rapid urban growth and quality of life. This creates a clearer focus because you are investigating how change affects people.

  3. Turn the issue into a question that invites evidence and judgement: “To what extent has rapid urban growth improved quality of life in Lagos?” This allows you to consider both positives, such as jobs and services, and negatives, such as informal housing and pressure on infrastructure.

Sequences of enquiry

A sequence of enquiry is the order of steps you follow to investigate a geographical question. It helps you avoid jumping straight to a conclusion before you have enough evidence.

Sequence of enquiry

A sequence of enquiry is a logical set of investigation stages, from asking a question to collecting evidence, analysing it, evaluating it and reaching a conclusion.

A typical GCSE Geography enquiry might follow these stages:

  1. Ask a focused geographical question.
  2. Break it into smaller sub-questions.
  3. Choose suitable evidence or data collection methods.
  4. Present the evidence clearly.
  5. Analyse patterns, causes and links.
  6. Evaluate the quality and limitations of the evidence.
  7. Reach a justified conclusion.

Tip

Use sub-questions

A big enquiry question becomes easier if you split it into sub-questions. For example, “How successful was river management?” could become: What flood risk existed before? What methods were used? Who benefited? Were there costs or conflicts?

Example

Planning an enquiry sequence

  1. Begin with the enquiry question: “How does river discharge change downstream along the River Tees?” This is measurable because you can compare sites along the river.

  2. Break it into sub-questions: How does width change? How does depth change? How does velocity change? These matter because discharge depends on channel size and speed of flow.

  3. Match each sub-question to evidence: measure width with a tape measure, depth with a metre ruler, and velocity with a float or flow meter. This makes the enquiry valid because each method directly links to the question.

  4. Decide how to analyse the results: calculate discharge using Q=A×VQ = A \times VQ=A×V, where QQQ is discharge, AAA is cross-sectional area and VVV is velocity. Then compare results from upstream and downstream sites.

Writing descriptively

Definition

Descriptive writing

Descriptive writing says what something is like. It identifies features, patterns, trends or changes, usually using evidence.

In geography, description often comes from a map, graph, photograph, population pyramid, climate graph, hydrograph or data table.

Good description uses:

  • Specific evidence, such as numbers, locations or directions.
  • Comparative language, such as higher, lower, steeper, more uneven or more densely populated.
  • Pattern language, such as clustered, dispersed, linear, increasing, decreasing or fluctuating.

For example, instead of writing “the population is high”, write “the population is highest in the south-east and is lower in the north and west.”

Common Mistake

Vague description

Avoid words like big, bad, lots and nice when you can be more precise. Geography rewards accurate description: use locations, figures, trends and named places where possible.

Writing analytically

Definition

Analytical writing

Analytical writing explains relationships between evidence, causes and effects. It answers “why?” or “so what?” rather than only “what?”

Analysis connects evidence to meaning. For example, if a hydrograph has a short lag time, an analytical answer explains that rapid surface runoff may have caused the river to reach peak discharge quickly.

Useful analytical connectives include:

  • because
  • therefore
  • this suggests
  • this leads to
  • as a result
  • this is linked to
Example

Moving from description to analysis

  1. Describe the evidence: “The storm hydrograph has a short lag time, with peak discharge occurring soon after peak rainfall.” This identifies the pattern.

  2. Link the pattern to a cause: “This suggests water reached the river quickly, possibly because the drainage basin had impermeable surfaces or saturated ground.” This explains why the pattern may have happened.

  3. Explain the consequence: “As a result, flood risk would be higher because the river channel has less time to carry the sudden increase in water.” This shows the geographical significance.

Writing critically

Definition

Critical writing

Critical writing weighs up evidence, considers limitations, compares viewpoints and makes a reasoned judgement.

Critical does not mean “negative”. It means you are thinking carefully about how strong the evidence is.

You might write critically when you:

  • Compare the importance of different factors.
  • Consider winners and losers.
  • Question whether data is reliable or representative.
  • Weigh short-term impacts against long-term impacts.
  • Decide whether a strategy was successful overall.

For example, when evaluating coastal management at the Holderness Coast, you might argue that sea walls protect towns such as Bridlington, but may increase erosion further along the coast where there is less protection.

Reliability and representativeness

Reliability means evidence is likely to be accurate and consistent. Representativeness means the evidence fairly reflects the wider area, group or issue being studied.

Example

Adding critical evaluation

  1. Make an evidence-based point: “Hard engineering can protect valuable property and infrastructure from coastal erosion.” This gives one side of the argument.

  2. Weigh it against a limitation: “However, it can be expensive and may transfer erosion further along the coast by interrupting sediment movement.” This introduces a wider consequence.

  3. Make a judgement: “Therefore, hard engineering may be most justified in high-value locations, but less suitable as a full-coastline solution.” This balances benefit, cost and spatial impact.

Communicating ideas effectively

To communicate effectively, you need to choose the clearest way to present your evidence and then explain what it shows.

Different evidence suits different presentation methods:

  • Maps show location, distribution and spatial patterns.
  • Line graphs show change over time.
  • Bar charts compare categories.
  • Pie charts show proportions, though they are less useful for detailed comparison.
  • Choropleth maps show data by area, such as population density by region.
  • Annotated photographs or sketches show visible features and processes.
  • Tables organise exact values, but patterns may be harder to see.

Match method to message

If your main point is about where something happens, use a map. If it is about change over time, use a line graph. If it is about comparing groups, use a bar chart.

Example

Choosing how to present evidence

  1. Suppose your enquiry is “How does environmental quality vary across a town centre?” The key idea is spatial variation, so a map is more useful than only a table.

  2. If you collected environmental quality scores at 10 sites, plotting them on a base map helps show whether high and low scores are clustered, linear or random.

  3. You could then support the map with a bar chart of scores for each site. The map shows the spatial pattern, while the bar chart makes comparison between sites easier.

Developing an extended written argument

Extended written argument

An extended written argument is a longer answer that develops a clear line of reasoning, supported by evidence, explanation and judgement.

A strong argument is not just a list of separate facts. Each paragraph should build towards your overall answer.

A helpful paragraph structure is:

  1. Claim — your main point.
  2. Evidence — a fact, figure, place detail or data pattern.
  3. Explanation — why the evidence matters.
  4. Link — how it answers the question.
  5. Judgement — how far, how important, or under what conditions.

For example, in a question about whether economic development improves quality of life, you might use a case study such as Nigeria. You could discuss growth in manufacturing, oil, services and international investment, but also weigh this against regional inequality, informal employment and environmental pressure.

Common Mistake

Case study dumping

Do not unload everything you know about a case study. Select the evidence that directly helps answer the question. A focused paragraph about one strong point is better than a long paragraph full of disconnected facts.

Example

Building a justified paragraph

  1. Make a focused claim: “Economic growth can improve quality of life by increasing employment opportunities.” This directly addresses the link between development and people’s lives.

  2. Add place-specific evidence: “In Nigeria, growth in cities such as Lagos has created jobs in manufacturing, services and informal trade.” This anchors the point in a real place without drifting into unrelated detail.

  3. Explain the effect: “Employment can raise household income, which may improve access to food, education and healthcare.” This shows why the evidence matters.

  4. Add balance: “However, benefits are uneven because many migrants live in informal settlements where services are limited.” This makes the argument more critical.

  5. Reach a mini-judgement: “So economic growth can improve quality of life, but the improvement depends on whether jobs and services are widely accessible.” This links back to the question.

Drawing well-evidenced and informed conclusions

Definition

Conclusion

A conclusion is a final judgement that answers the enquiry question using the evidence you have analysed.

A conclusion should not simply repeat earlier points. It should weigh them up.

A strong conclusion usually includes:

  • A direct answer to the question.
  • The strongest evidence supporting your judgement.
  • A recognition of complexity, such as variation between places, groups or timescales.
  • A note on data limitations if relevant.

For example, in fieldwork, your conclusion might say that the hypothesis was mostly supported, but that results from one site were unusual because of recent rainfall, human interference or a small sample size.

Example

Writing an informed conclusion

  1. Decide the overall judgement: “The evidence mostly supports the idea that environmental quality improves with distance from the town centre.” This directly answers the enquiry.

  2. Select the strongest supporting evidence: “Scores were lowest at the central shopping streets and generally higher in residential areas further out.” This uses the main pattern rather than every data point.

  3. Deal with exceptions: “However, one outer site scored poorly because of heavy traffic near a main road, showing that distance is not the only factor.” This makes the conclusion more realistic.

  4. Evaluate confidence: “The conclusion is fairly reliable because several sites were sampled, but a larger sample on different days would make it stronger.” This considers evidence quality.

Useful language for enquiry and argument

These phrases help you move from simple description to developed reasoning:

For description

  • “The highest values are found in…”
  • “The pattern is clustered around…”
  • “There is a general increase from… to…”
  • “The data fluctuates, with peaks at…”

For analysis

  • “This may be because…”
  • “This leads to…”
  • “This suggests that…”
  • “A possible reason is…”

For critical evaluation

  • “However, this evidence is limited because…”
  • “This is more significant in the short term because…”
  • “The impact varies between…”
  • “Overall, the strongest factor is…”
Common Mistake

Do not overclaim

If evidence is limited, avoid saying “this proves”. In geography, it is often safer to write “this suggests”, “the evidence indicates” or “this is likely because”.

Exam technique

In the exam

  1. Answer the exact question: if it asks “to what extent”, make a judgement; if it asks “evaluate”, weigh strengths and limitations.

  2. Use evidence early: include named places, figures, map evidence, fieldwork data or case-study detail before explaining your point.

  3. Build a line of reasoning: connect points using words such as because, therefore, however and overall so your answer reads like an argument, not a list.

  4. Finish with a conclusion: give a clear final judgement and support it with the strongest evidence you have used.
