Fieldwork Investigation: River Restoration Study

Students conducted an environmental quality survey comparing a heavily channelized urban river section with a newly restored naturalized river section.

Characteristics of the two sections

  • Channelized river section: Concrete-lined steep banks, metal fencing preventing access, industrial runoff pipe, absence of bankside plants, accumulation of floating litter.
  • Restored river section: Re-graded soil banks bioengineered with coconut-fibre rolls, gravel riffle-pool sequences, pedestrian boardwalks with informational signage, native wildflower planting, wetland marginal zones.

Environmental quality survey

Scores range from -3 (Very poor quality) to +3 (Excellent quality).
