5.1.1 Present and organise information, sustaining and adapting talk

Present and organise information, sustaining and adapting talk: core knowledge

  1. Specification focus. Present and organise information clearly and purposefully, sustaining and adapting their talk in formal and informal situations using a variety of techniques and verbal reasoning skills as appropriate.
  2. What the skill means. Present and organise information, sustaining and adapting talk is not an isolated fact to memorise. In reading, it is a practical decision-making skill. A successful response must show that the student can read, analyse and evaluate with control, using short, well-selected textual references and developed inference.
  3. Why it matters. WJEC rewards relevant, sustained work. The skill helps a response remain focused on the exact task while developing ideas far enough to demonstrate understanding, judgement and technical control.
Key Idea
  • Treat the wording of 5.1.1 as a set of actions to demonstrate. Underline the key verb, identify the required evidence or writing choice, and decide what a complete answer must prove.

Present and organise information, sustaining and adapting talk: a reliable method

  1. Read for the overall situation, viewpoint and intended effect.
  2. Select precise evidence that reveals a significant pattern or contrast.
  3. Explain how language, structure or presentation shapes meaning.
  4. Evaluate alternative interpretations and connect each judgment to the text.
  5. Make the reasoning visible. Do not leave the examiner to infer the link. Name the evidence or choice, state what it shows or achieves, and explain why that effect is relevant to the question, purpose or audience.
  6. Build depth. Move beyond a single feature or assertion. Explore a pattern, development, contrast, consequence or alternative interpretation. In writing, develop and shape the idea rather than adding devices mechanically.

Present and organise information, sustaining and adapting talk: application and improvement

  1. Worked application. Begin with the precise task. Select one relevant detail or deliberate choice, explain its immediate function, then develop the wider implication. Check that the final sentence answers the task rather than merely naming a technique.
  2. Diagnose weakness. If the response feels thin, locate the cause: vague evidence, undeveloped explanation, weak sequencing, unsuitable register or inaccurate expression. Revise that exact weakness and compare the new version with the original.
  3. Practise deliberately. Use a short unseen extract or realistic WJEC task. Complete one timed paragraph or planned section, annotate where present and organise information, sustaining and adapting talk is demonstrated, and record a specific target for the next attempt.
Exam technique
  • For WJEC GCSE English Language, check the exact component and section before answering. Follow the stated source range and form, respond to every command word, use the mark allocation to control time, and reserve a final check for relevance and accuracy.
Common Mistake
  • Avoid generic effect phrases, feature spotting and memorised templates. Every inference, evaluation or crafted choice must fit the particular text, purpose, audience and task.
Self review
  • Can I explain present and organise information, sustaining and adapting talk accurately in my own words?
  • Can I apply the method to an unfamiliar WJEC text or task?
  • Have I used precise evidence or purposeful writing choices?
  • Can I identify one weakness and make a specific improvement?

Presenting and organising information means selecting relevant ideas, arranging them clearly and explaining how they answer the task. Sustaining talk means developing a point far enough to show understanding, while adapting talk means changing language, detail, register or structure to suit the audience, purpose and situation.

Treat the wording of the task as a set of actions. Identify the key command word, the evidence or writing choice required, the audience and purpose, and what a complete answer must prove.

A strong response makes the reasoning visible: name the evidence or choice, state what it shows or achieves, and explain why that matters to the question or audience.
