Question 6

Stranded in the snow

Text 1: The 17.42, by Eleanor Fairbrass

An original short story extract.

The 17.42 to Carlisle stopped in the middle of a white field and did not start again. After an hour the guard announced that the points were frozen and engineers were on their way. At first nobody spoke. Then the woman opposite me opened a tin of flapjacks, looked at us all, and passed it across the table. A student in a rugby shirt produced a flask of tomato soup and poured it into the plastic cups from the empty buffet trolley. An elderly man handed round a bag of satsumas, peeling one for the girl beside him because her fingers were too cold. Someone lent me a phone charger. By the third hour, the whole carriage was doing a crossword together, shouting answers down the aisle, and the man with the satsumas had taken off his scarf and wrapped it round the neck of a sleeping baby.

Give three words or phrases that show the passengers sharing things with each other.
