3.3.7 Evaluate form and structure

Evaluate form and structure: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. evaluate how form and structure contribute to the effectiveness and impact of a text
  2. What success looks like. The response demonstrates the named skill accurately and purposefully. Relevant evidence, developed reasoning and controlled communication matter more than memorised terminology.
Key Idea
  • Turn the specification wording into an action that can be demonstrated with an unfamiliar text or task.

Evaluate form and structure: a reliable method

  1. Decode the task. Identify form, audience, purpose and required content before choosing voice, register and organisation.
  2. Plan progression. Give each paragraph a distinct role and arrange ideas for argument, description, narrative or explanation.
  3. Craft deliberately. Select precise vocabulary and vary syntax to control clarity, pace, tone and emphasis. Complexity must remain accurate.
  4. Edit systematically. Check task fulfilment and organisation first, then grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Evaluate form and structure: application and improvement

  1. Worked thinking. For a non-fiction task, establish a suitable voice immediately, develop each point with explanation or example and finish with an outcome appropriate to readers.

To evaluate form and structure, explain how the kind of text and the way it is organised help it work effectively. Form means the text type, such as a speech, article or letter; structure means how its ideas or events are arranged.

A strong response links a specific choice to its effect in this text, for this purpose and audience. Naming a technique is not enough, and effects such as “it engages the reader” need precise explanation.
