Dad fixes the washer

Text 1: No Need for a Plumber, by Alistair Munro

An original novel extract.

Dad said there was no need to call a plumber, which is how the kitchen ended up underwater. The washing machine had been making a noise like a cement mixer for a week, so on Sunday morning he pulled it out from the wall, lay on his back on the lino and began unscrewing things. I passed him the spanner. Then the bigger spanner. Then he unscrewed a grey hose at the back, and the water that had been sitting inside the drum came out all at once, a cold grey wave that soaked his jumper and raced across the floor towards the cat’s bowl. The cat left the room without a sound. Mum appeared in the doorway in her dressing gown and looked at the water, then at Dad, then at the phone. ‘I’ll find the number,’ she said.

Explain how the kitchen floor becomes flooded.
