A parcel for Flat 3
Text 1: Please Hand to Person, by Rosalind Fenwick
An original short story extract.
The parcel was waiting on our doormat when I got back from college, wrapped in brown paper and tied with string like something from a film. It was not for us. The label said Mr T. Varga, Flat 3, and Flat 3 was the ground floor, where the man with the alsatian lived, the one who shouted at children for bouncing balls against the garages. Mum was at work. I could have left it on the stairs, but the label also said FRAGILE in three places, and somebody had written PLEASE HAND TO PERSON underneath in careful capitals. So I carried it down, holding it out in front of me, and knocked. The dog barked first. Then the door opened on its chain, and a pale eye looked at the parcel, then at me, and filled suddenly with tears.
Explain why the narrator carries the parcel down to Flat 3 instead of leaving it on the stairs.
