Rush hour underground
Text 1: Six More Stations, by Danielle Okoro
An original short story extract.
By Bank station there was no room left to fall over. I stood with my face a few centimetres from a stranger’s rucksack, which smelled faintly of oranges, and my arm was bent above my head around the yellow pole. Every time the train braked, the whole carriage leaned forward together and somebody’s elbow found my ribs. The air was thick and warm, as if the carriage had been breathing it all morning. Sweat crept down inside my shirt. I wanted to check the time, but my phone was in my back pocket and I could not reach it without touching three other people. A man near the doors was somehow reading a folded newspaper, completely calm. I envied him. I counted the stations on the map above the window: six more, and each one seemed further away than the last.
