Fog on the Moor

Text 1: Hollin Farm, by Gideon Farrow

An original short story extract.

The fog came down between the second cattle grid and the third, and by the time Lorna noticed, the road had gone. One moment there were dry-stone walls on either side of the van; the next there was only white, pressing against the windscreen, soft and blind.

She slowed to a crawl. The wipers swept and swept and changed nothing. Her headlights made it worse, throwing the white back at her so that it glowed, and she switched them off and sat with the engine ticking. Somewhere outside a sheep coughed, very close, like an old man. She jumped.

Hollin Farm was a mile on, maybe less. She had driven this road a hundred times. She knew the bend by the thorn tree, the dip where the stream crossed. But the fog had swallowed every landmark, and the moor around her could have been any moor, anywhere, or no place at all. She got out. The air was cold and wet against her face and tasted of iron. She took three steps from the van and turned, and already its shape had begun to fade, grey into grey, as if it had never been there.

How does Gideon Farrow use language and structure to show that Lorna feels lost and uneasy in the fog?

You should use relevant subject terminology to support your answer.
