Books in the phone box
Text 1: Take one, leave one, by Rachel Hollins
An original contemporary article.
When the payphone was taken out of our village’s red telephone box, the parish council bought the empty kiosk for a pound and a few of us turned it into a book exchange. Shelves went up where the phone had been, and a sign invited people to take a book and leave one. By February we had two problems. Condensation ran down the glass on cold mornings, and paperbacks left near the panes had swollen and spotted with mould. The shelves had also filled with out-of-date road atlases and a full set of encyclopaedias that nobody wanted, leaving no room for anything new. A volunteer now fits a tub of moisture crystals each month and quietly takes the atlases to the recycling centre.
Explain two problems the book exchange faced by February.
