Recording a night walk

An original contemporary non-fiction-style account.

Our wildlife survey was supposed to record the sounds of the lane after dark. I switched on the recorder, then walked along commenting on every noise I noticed. When we played the file back, my voice covered the faint calls we were trying to identify. Even in the pauses, the microphone caught the scrape of my coat sleeve. On the second night I placed the recorder on a fence post and stood several steps away without speaking. The silence I contributed made the recording far more useful.

Explain two ways the narrator spoiled the first recording.
