Text 1: A garden for the whole street, by Nia Roberts
An original contemporary online feature.
When an empty plot beside the library became overgrown, residents in Alder Street decided to turn it into a community garden. On Saturday mornings, volunteers clear weeds, plant vegetables and water the beds. Some bring tools; others help children sow seeds. The group shares the vegetables with people who help in the garden, and leaves a box by the library door for anyone to take what they need. Local residents now stop to talk while they work.
Text 2: Mending things together, by Ellis Morgan
An original contemporary magazine feature.
Once a month, volunteers open a repair table in the community hall. People bring small household items that no longer work, and the volunteers show them how to mend them. A retired electrician helps with lamps, while other volunteers sew torn clothes or fix loose handles. Visitors can stay and learn, or take their repaired item home. The group says the sessions help people avoid throwing useful things away, and give neighbours a chance to meet.
Using information from both texts, explain briefly how volunteers contributed to their community projects and how local people benefited.
