Text 1: Rain interrupts the annual book fair, by Megan Price
An original contemporary newspaper report.
The open-air book fair in Bellmere had been running for an hour when rain swept across the recreation ground. Visitors hurried beneath the stalls’ canvas covers, while volunteers draped sheets over the boxes of books. A group of children stayed near the entrance, jumping over puddles. Some families left straight away, but others waited under the covers until the shower passed.
Text 2: A wet afternoon at the village picnic, by A Correspondent
An original newspaper report written in a nineteenth-century voice; a period simulation, not an archival document.
Text 2 is from a newspaper report written in the 1890s about a village picnic on the common.
The rain began just as the first baskets were opened. The company made for the pavilion, carrying their food with them, and several gentlemen held coats above the baskets to keep them dry. A few families turned for home, though many remained beneath the roof, talking and laughing until the clouds cleared.
Using information from both texts, explain briefly how people at the outdoor events reacted when rain interrupted them.
