Question 21

Snow at Cefn Llwyd, by Herbert Lingwood

An original short story extract set in the twentieth century.

The knock came at two in the morning, and this time Mam told Tegwen to get dressed as well. It was February 1961, the snow had closed the lane to Cefn Llwyd, and the doctor’s car could not get up the valley, so the two of them went on foot behind the farmer’s lantern, Mam’s bag wrapped in oilcloth against the wet. At the farmhouse Mam went straight upstairs and gave Tegwen her orders over her shoulder. The range was to be kept roaring, and the big kettle was never to be off the boil. The four other children, woken by the noise, were to be taken into the parlour and kept quiet, whatever it took; Tegwen played snap with them until the smallest fell asleep across the cards. Every half hour she was to carry a jug of hot water to the top of the stairs, knock, leave it on the landing and not come in. The sheepdog was to be shut in the back porch. When the farmer came in from the cowshed she was to make him tea with three sugars, because he had not sat down all night. Just before six a thin, furious cry came down the stairs, and the eldest boy asked whether that was the new calf.

List five jobs Tegwen is given to do at the farm.
