Question 22

The last fitting, by Cecily Anslow

An original short story extract set in the twentieth century.

Cyril Pomeroy’s wig-making room occupied the top floor above a tailor’s shop in 1963. He wore a blue coat with a ruler in its breast pocket and kept his spectacles on a cord woven by his eldest daughter. Clients sat in a high-backed chair facing the wall; Cyril said a mirror made them pull unnatural expressions. He measured each head twice, once before conversation and once after the client had relaxed. The measurements went into a narrow notebook which nobody else was permitted to open. He curled the pale hair round wooden pegs and arranged the finished curls on a linen cloth, never directly on the table. His hands shook when he poured tea, but not when he threaded a needle. On the windowsill stood three badly made wigs from his apprenticeship. He refused to throw them away, saying that customers deserved to know how much practice their money was buying.

List five things you learn about Cyril in this extract.
