St Barnabas Hall, by Desmond Fairweather

An original short story extract set in the twentieth century.

The youth club met in St Barnabas church hall every Tuesday from seven until half past nine, and in the winter of 1970 it cost twopence to get in. The hall had a stage at one end with curtains that would not close, and a radiator that clanked all evening without giving out any heat. There was one table-tennis table, with a dip in the middle where somebody had once sat on it, and the boys played winner-stays-on until the ball split. The girls mostly gathered round a record player by the stage and danced in a line, ignoring the boys entirely. Reverend Caradog, who ran the club, was barely older than some of the members, and he joined in every game of five-a-side on the car park, still in his dog collar. He had a rule that anyone caught smoking had to stack all the chairs at the end of the night, so the chairs were usually stacked by the same three people. At nine o’clock he made orange squash in a tea urn, which tasted faintly of tea.

List five things you learn about the youth club in this extract.
