Question 30

The library after closing

In this question you will be assessed for the quality of your creative prose writing skills. 24 marks are awarded for communication and organisation; 16 marks are awarded for vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling and punctuation.

You should aim to write about 450 to 600 words.

Write a story about someone who is still in a local library after it has closed. Your story should include:

  • a discovery that changes what the character thinks is happening;
  • a moment when the character must decide whether to act;
  • an ending that shows what the character has learnt or how a relationship has changed.

You may use these ideas to help organise your story:

  • Begin by making the library seem ordinary as closing time approaches.
  • Introduce a sound, object or message that creates uncertainty.
  • Build towards the character’s decision and show its consequences.
  • End by returning to a detail from the beginning in a changed way.
