4.1.4 AO3: compare ideas and perspectives across texts

AO3: compare ideas and perspectives across texts: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. Compare writers’ ideas and perspectives, as well as how these are conveyed, across two or more texts
  2. What success looks like. The response demonstrates the required skill accurately and purposefully. Relevant evidence, developed reasoning and controlled communication matter more than memorised terminology.
Key Idea
  • This guide belongs to Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language 1EN2. Keep its paper structure and task demands distinct from the other Edexcel route.

AO3: compare ideas and perspectives across texts: a reliable method

  1. Establish a shared focus. Turn the question into a comparison point about ideas, viewpoints or methods.
  2. Pair evidence. Choose concise evidence from both texts that supports the same line of reasoning.
  3. Analyse the relationship. Explain how each writer treats the focus and why the similarity or difference matters.
  4. Sustain comparison. Move between texts within paragraphs rather than writing two separate responses.

AO3: compare ideas and perspectives across texts: application and improvement

  1. Worked thinking. If two writers present responsibility differently, pair evidence around that shared idea and explain how tone, structure or imagery reveals their contrasting viewpoints.
  2. Diagnose and revise. Name the exact weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin development, weak organisation, unsuitable register or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature specifically.
Exam technique
  • For Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language 1EN2, follow the exact paper and section instructions. Do not transfer timings, source requirements or question structures from 1EN0.
Common Mistake
  • Avoid generic effects and universal paragraph formulas. Every explanation or crafted choice must fit the text, task, purpose and audience.
Key Idea
  • Apply ao3: compare ideas and perspectives across texts specifically within Edexcel 1EN2 Section 4.1. Check that section's source material, command word, mark value and response form before planning. Practise the skill in this context and explain which choice makes the answer more precise, coherent or effective.
Self review
  • Can I explain ao3: compare ideas and perspectives across texts in my own words?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used precise evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?

AO3 asks you to compare writers’ ideas and perspectives across texts, including how those viewpoints are conveyed. A strong answer explains a meaningful relationship between the texts, rather than listing what each says.

For Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language 1EN2, check the question’s command word, source material and response requirements before planning. Do not assume that a task from another Edexcel route has the same structure.
