Question 32

Paying at the weekend market

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

When I volunteered at a weekend market, the smallest sales caused the longest delays. Customers searched for coins, while we opened tins and coat pockets looking for change. The card reader altered that routine. I entered the amount, the customer checked it and the payment was recorded. It did not make our pottery cheaper or more desirable; it simply removed an obstacle between a decision and a purchase.

At lunchtime, the connection failed. We accepted cash and wrote down two card sales to complete later. That interruption was useful because it showed what the device depended on: power, a working connection and somebody who knew how to use it. Once it returned, the electronic record helped us check the day's sales without reconstructing them from a muddle of notes and coins.

I would not make the market cashless. A payment method should widen the ways people can buy, not become another test they must pass. I support the reader because it can make a transaction quicker and easier to check. Its value lies in offering a choice, not in forcing every customer to arrive prepared in the same way.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

I recently bought three things at a community market. Each card payment took only seconds, yet by the third stall I could not have said how much I had spent altogether. When I used to take £20 in notes, the money remaining in my envelope supplied an obvious limit. The quick payments suited the queue, but they also removed the pause in which I might have reconsidered another purchase.

Access matters even more than attention. My neighbour uses cash, and my niece often brings money she has been given. At one stall, a handwritten sign announced card payments only. The products were available to them, but the method of paying was not. Convenience for most customers should not be described as convenience for everyone.

I am not arguing that markets should reject card readers. Sellers can display their payment methods clearly, state the price before taking payment and retain a reliable way to accept cash. At the last stall, I watched a customer put a jar back after learning the price, then return with coins from a pocket. That small pause is part of shopping too: people need room to decide, and the market should make payment options visible before anyone reaches the front.

Compare how the writers present their ideas and perspectives about cashless payment at community markets. Support your comparisons with detailed references to both texts.
