Question 12

Money left after the errand

Text A: an original contemporary practice extract.

The drama group gave me twenty pounds to buy buttons for the costumes. The shop had a clearance box, and the suitable buttons cost eleven pounds altogether. I put the change in the same envelope as the receipt. At rehearsal, someone suggested spending the rest on biscuits because the money had already been set aside.

I returned the envelope to the treasurer and mentioned the suggestion. She agreed that biscuits would be welcome, but said the group should decide separately whether to buy them. I had been asked to bring back buttons, not to find a use for every pound. Recording the actual cost left the remaining money visible to the people responsible for the whole production budget.

Text B: an original contemporary practice extract.

Before a club visit, members contributed towards the organiser’s estimate for printing and postage. A local business offered the printing at a reduced price, so the amount collected exceeded what the letters cost. The organiser could have added a small extra to the visit without asking anyone for more money.

Instead, she circulated the final costs and asked whether members wanted the remainder returned or held towards another outing. They chose to keep it, and the decision appeared in the next meeting notes. The money did not become the organiser’s spare fund because it was already in her envelope. Telling people what had changed allowed them to choose a new purpose rather than discover one had been chosen for them.

Both texts describe the responses to the unspent money.

What similarities do the responses to the unspent money share in these extracts? Use evidence from both texts to support your answer.
