Question 7

The clock above the post office

Text: an original contemporary report-style practice extract.

The clock above Northmere’s former post office has kept time again since volunteers completed a six-month repair. They replaced the cracked dial glass and fitted a new winding mechanism, while retaining the original brass hands. The work was carried out in a workshop before the clock was returned to the tower last Friday.

Residents gathered in the square to hear it strike noon for the first time in years. The repair team said the clock would be checked regularly over the coming months.

From the opening paragraph, identify two components that were replaced.
