Collision at the lock
Text: an original contemporary report-style practice extract.
A hire boat struck a lock gate shortly before midday, leaving the vessel tilted against the stone wall. Two canal workers lowered an emergency barrier to prevent other boats from entering the lock. They then helped the four passengers climb safely onto the towpath. A cyclist used the emergency telephone to report the collision, while the boat’s owner remained beside the damaged vessel until an inspection team arrived.
From the extract, identify two actions taken by the canal workers after the collision.
