Archive staff found that rainwater had entered the ground-floor store beneath a loading door. They carried the damp boxes of local records to a dry room upstairs and laid absorbent barriers across the doorway to stop more water getting in. The reading room stayed open throughout.
Staff left the boxes open in the upstairs room and recorded which ones had been moved. A building inspection was arranged for the following morning.
