The warehouse pause

Text: an original contemporary reportage-style practice extract.

On the tour, the robots appeared to know exactly where they were going. Small platforms carried shelves across the warehouse floor, turning neatly at painted boundaries. The guide described the system as seamless. A minute later, one platform stopped, and the shelf behind it stopped too. The seam had become a queue.

A technician checked the route on a tablet, then walked to a piece of packing tape stuck across a floor marker. She removed it and asked the control desk to restart the section. The platforms resumed their quiet traffic. I had expected a complicated fault inside a machine. The obstruction had been thin enough to wrap around my finger. Keeping the system moving required people who noticed details the tour’s broad view had made almost invisible.

At the exit, the guide repeated that the warehouse could move more orders than before. The figure may have been impressive, but the pause supplied a different way to understand it. A system described as seamless still contained seams that someone had to maintain. The person removing the tape had not interrupted the demonstration. She had demonstrated the part we were least likely to see.
