Question 244

The crowded platform

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

Ada stood beneath the station clock, where they had agreed to meet. Every train emptied another crowd between her and the platform edge. Hats, boxes, shoulders: the people became a moving wall. She held her brother’s letter above her bag, though nobody but her could read its directions. The clock struck the half-hour.

She walked towards the barrier, then returned to the clock. Perhaps he had already passed her. Perhaps he waited outside. A porter asked whether she needed help, and she began describing her brother’s coat. Before she finished, a hand touched her sleeve. She turned so quickly that the letter fell. Her brother bent to retrieve it, still carrying the blue scarf she had forgotten to mention.

Analyse how the writer uses language and structure to present Ada’s difficulty finding her brother. Support your answer with references to the passage.
