Question 128

The final window

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

Mrs Hart inspected the house before handing over the keys. In the kitchen she found a mark where the old shelf had stood. Upstairs, the walls were bare. She paused at the final window, watching the pear tree move beyond the glass. Leaving had seemed simple while there were boxes to carry. Now the empty rooms asked her to remember everything at once. She closed the window gently and went downstairs.

Identify the phrase which suggests that the empty house brings back many memories.
