It climbed the pebbles in a thin clear sheet, paused and slipped back, taking the smallest stones with it. I watched one striped stone near the edge. The first wave turned it halfway. The next covered it but did not move it. A piece of red seaweed caught against its side and stayed there while the water drained away. Around it, white stones appeared and disappeared, briefly easy to distinguish from the grey until their surfaces dried and lost some of the contrast.
