Question 153

A nineteenth-century prose fiction passage.

Nora laid the wedding cloth across the worktable. The chalk line ran towards the edge, where a faint stain darkened the weave. Mrs Bell had measured it twice and left the cutting to her. Beside the cloth, the shears looked larger than they had that morning.

Nora set the blades against the chalk. One careless movement, she thought, and months of work would be wasted. She lifted the cloth to the window; the stain vanished in the light, though she could still feel its roughness beneath her thumb. From the next room came Mrs Bell’s voice, asking whether the bodice was ready.

Nora turned the cloth around. A second chalk line, almost rubbed away, crossed the first and left more fabric on the stained side. She followed it with her finger, then lowered the shears. The first cut was small and clean. She did not call out to Mrs Bell. Instead, she smoothed the cloth flat and looked again at the pale mark, now lying beyond the cut edge.

Analyse how the writer uses language and structure to present Nora’s changing response to cutting the cloth, and how the ending complicates the impression of her decision. Support your answer with references to the passage.
