I could see the ball leave one racket, disappear against the grey air and reappear near the other player’s shoes. Its yellow colour arrived in fragments. The sound was easier to follow: a firm strike, a short bounce, another strike. Somewhere farther away, a second pair made the same noises without supplying any visible bodies. Drops collected on the net’s upper band. When a ball caught it, several fell together, leaving darker marks on the court. The player walked forward to retrieve the ball and looked unexpectedly large once she was close to the fence. Her partner remained near the far line, a less definite figure with a racket that flashed whenever it turned towards a lamp. The distance between them could be heard more reliably than it could be seen. Beyond the courts, the clubhouse door opened. A warm rectangle appeared where I had been looking at uninterrupted grey. Someone stood there briefly, then went back inside. The players continued, their ball passing through the part of the air that erased it. I knew the shape of the courts well. In the fog, that knowledge supplied corners and paths that the morning itself was no longer showing me. This is one possible response, not a required script. At the foot of the steps, a row of stone columns began in the torchlight and continued beyond it. Water covered the floor between them. I could not tell its depth. Each column seemed to grow downwards as well as upwards, its reflected base meeting a second roof beneath the surface. The nearest arch carried a dark mineral stain. Drops gathered along its lower edge and fell separately, each disturbing a small circle on the water. Their sound arrived from several directions. With the courtyard door closed above us, there was no traffic or conversation to locate the place in the day outside. The guide’s torch found a carved capital: leaves cut in stone, worn smooth where moisture had moved over them for years. A narrow walkway followed the wall. Its railing had been added recently, plain metal against the rough blocks. Beneath it, a pale shape drifted towards a column. For a moment it looked alive. Then the light caught its edges and showed a leaf, carried down from the courtyard by somebody’s shoe. It moved so slowly that the surface appeared to be deciding where to put it. At the far corner, the guide lowered a measuring rod through a gap. The mirrored roof broke around it. A faint line marked the wet stone, showing where the water had stood in a drier month. The guide drew the rod out, and the disturbance travelled between the columns until its circles overlapped. Gradually the second roof returned. Above us, the courtyard was still only a short flight of steps away. In the restored reflection, the chamber seemed to contain another whole depth of darkness.
