The rising river
An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.
The river had crossed the lower field before Nell reached the cottage. Inside, chairs stood upon the table and the cold water shone between the floorboards. Her uncle called from the cart for her to leave everything, but Nell ran upstairs. She passed the silver candlesticks without touching them. From the bedroom she took her father's account book; from the windowsill she gathered the small packet of seeds her mother had saved. With these held beneath her shawl, she hurried back through the rain.
From the passage, give the two possessions that Nell chooses to save.
