From the footbridge, I could see its narrow course bend between the banks, where long grass leaned over the water. A few flat stones broke the surface near the far side, each one surrounded by a wavering edge of light. At first, the water seemed almost still. Then a leaf slipped from the bank and began to travel downstream. It turned slowly, caught in a small circle beneath the bridge, and was carried on again. The current had been there all along; the leaf made its direction visible. I followed it with my eyes until it passed the stones. There the stream narrowed, and the water gathered itself into quick, bright lines. A faint rush reached me, then softened as the leaf drifted into the wider stretch beyond. The grass moved gently above it, brushing the bank as if marking the route it had taken. When the leaf disappeared around the bend, the stream seemed quieter. I looked back at the bridge and the meadow, but now the whole place appeared to be moving in small ways: the water, the grass, the light shifting across the stones. I had thought of the stream as a line through the field. Watching that leaf, I began to see it as a journey through the place. This is one possible response, not a required script. Alternative subjects, viewpoints and structures are equally valid when they address the task.
