Question 69

The draughty lodging

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

The candle flame bent whenever the wind crossed the room. Stephen found a broad gap beneath the door and folded yesterday's newspaper into a thick strip, pushing it tightly underneath. At the window, a cracked pane rattled in its frame. He drew the wooden shutters together and fastened their iron bar. Then he placed his boots beside the cold hearth and sat down to remove his coat.

Give two ways Stephen reduces the draught in the room.
