The naturalist's cases
An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.
The axle broke as Mr Vale's wagon drew level with the roadside inn. Inside the wagon, six wooden cases held the specimens he had intended to display at the Philosophical Society that evening. After examining the damage, he arranged for the landlord to lock the cases in the inn's storeroom. The lecture would still take place, but Mr Vale would base it on his written observations instead of showing the collection.
Give two ways in which Mr Vale changes his plans after the axle breaks.
