Question 56

The wind on the common

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

Ruth was carrying her uncle's drawings across the common when a sudden gust tore them from beneath her arm. One sheet sailed towards the road, while the others fell at her feet. She set her market basket squarely upon the fallen pages. Only then did she hurry after the runaway sheet, calling to her brother to stay beside the basket.

Give the object Ruth uses to hold down the drawings that remain beside her.
