Question 48

The fallen cake

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

Jane had promised to bake the seed cake for her mother's birthday. When she opened the oven, however, the middle had sunk and one edge was black. Her little brother took a bite and declared it delicious. Jane laughed with him, then turned towards the window and wiped her eyes before anyone could see. ‘We shall put the best side towards Mother,’ she said.

Identify a phrase that shows Jane is trying to hide her disappointment.
