The open birdcage
An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.
Mrs Fenner came into the morning room humming as she carried a saucer of seed towards the window. Sunlight lay across the little brass cage. Then she noticed that its door was swinging loose and the perch inside was bare. The tune died on her lips.
