The peppermint jar
An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.
Miriam entered the apothecary’s shop to collect medicine for her husband. As the assistant searched the shelves, he loosened the lid of a tall glass jar. The scent of peppermint carried her back to Saturday pennies pressed into her small hand and the solemn choice of one sweet from the counter. For a moment, she forgot the bottle waiting to be wrapped.
Identify the phrase which shows that the scent returns Miriam to her childhood.
