Question 29

Ready for Sunday

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

Thomas lifted his boots from beside the hearth. Although his sister had brushed them, dried mud remained around the heels. The lace was missing from the left boot, and a narrow split showed in the leather above its toe. He placed the boots beneath the table and searched the sewing basket for a length of cord.

Give one detail about the condition of Thomas's boots.
