Question 28

The match at Mill Farm

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

Mr Latham told the innkeeper that cricket held no appeal for him. He sat beneath the inn awning to wait for the carrier while the teams assembled in the field. A cart rattled along the road behind him, and he turned to watch it pass. At the first delivery, however, his gaze left the road and followed the ball across the field.

Identify the sentence which suggests that Mr Latham is interested in the match despite what he has said.
