The fisherman’s return
An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.
The fisherman returned at dawn with an empty basket. The line had snapped when a fish pulled beneath the bridge, and his spare hook had fallen through a gap in the boards. He left the damaged rod beside the door. His daughter offered him bread and hot tea. After eating, he borrowed a hook from his neighbour and began repairing the line, refusing to let the morning end with the empty basket.
Give two reasons the fisherman returns without a fish.
