The brass speaking tube

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

The passenger steamer’s brass speaking tube connected the engine room with the wheelhouse. New apprentice Lewis had been told to repeat every order exactly. During his first evening, a voice came through asking for reduced speed. He repeated it to the engineer. A few minutes later, another message seemed to request full speed again.

The engineer reached for the lever. Lewis asked him to wait. Water had dripped into the tube, making the words bubble and break. He was not certain what he had heard. The engineer said hesitation could create its own danger, but sent a man up the companionway to check. Lewis stood beside the polished mouthpiece, wishing it would produce an unmistakable instruction.

The man returned breathless. The pilot had said to hold the reduced speed because a fishing boat was crossing ahead. He had never ordered full speed. The engineer kept the lever where it was. Through the open hatch, Lewis heard a distant shout and the slap of water against another hull.

Later, the engineer showed him how to clear the tube and ask for a message to be repeated. He said Lewis should have done that immediately. Lewis accepted the correction. He had prevented one mistake, but the uncertainty had lasted longer than necessary. The brass shone as brightly as before; he no longer mistook its neat appearance for a guarantee that every word would arrive intact.
