Question 127

The closed shop

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

Thomas reached the shop at noon and found the shutters fastened. A notice announced that the owner had gone to a funeral. He had walked three miles to collect the repaired clock. After reading the notice twice, he sat on the low wall and took bread from his pocket. He decided to return on Monday, when the market would be open and his sister could accompany him in the cart.

Give two reasons Monday will be a convenient day for Thomas to return.
