Question 19

The school admission form

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

The school secretary asked Mrs Reed to sign the admission form. She held the pen carefully and made a mark beside her son’s name. The secretary looked at it, then asked whether she could write the name herself. Her son began answering for her. Mrs Reed placed one hand on his sleeve and said that she would answer the questions.

She explained that she had never attended school regularly. The secretary lowered his voice and started reading the form slowly, as if each ordinary word required explanation. Mrs Reed asked him to speak at his usual pace. She understood the conditions; she could not read the written copy. The distinction made the boy look down at the table.

The secretary asked about the child’s previous lessons. Mrs Reed described the books he had borrowed, the sums he practised and the hours he could be spared from the shop. Her answers were precise. When the secretary returned to the signature, she asked whether a witnessed mark was permitted. He checked the rule book and found that it was.

The form was accepted. Outside, her son apologised for interrupting. She said he had wanted to help, but should first ask what help was needed. At home, she placed the school’s printed instructions beside the ledger she used for stock. That evening, she asked him to read the instructions aloud while she checked the arrangements she had already understood.

“The passage effectively challenges the assumption that difficulty with reading means difficulty with understanding.”
