Question 89

The late pupil

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

Hannah heard the school bell while she was still halfway along Market Street. A drover was driving a herd of cattle up the road, so she had been forced to wait in a doorway until the last of them had passed. When she finally entered the schoolroom, the other pupils were already writing at their desks.

Give one reason Hannah arrives late for school.
