Question 82

The bakery at night

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

Anna had worked beside her mother in the bakery kitchen since she was small. She knew the warm brick oven, the flour bins and the long wooden table. After midnight, with the lamps unlit and the ovens cold, it was as though she had entered another person’s kitchen. She reached for the door at once.

Identify the sentence which suggests that, at night, the kitchen no longer seems to be Anna’s own.
