An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.
After midnight, Margaret remained in the library while the rest of the household slept. From the yard came the slow scrape of a shovel. She set down her book and listened. A horse coughed beyond the wall; then the house was silent again. Margaret rose, uncertain who could be working at such an hour.
