Question 61

The photographer's plates

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

The photographer had arranged the glass plates on the high shelf before the sitting began. When one was found cracked, he looked at Miriam, who had been dusting the window ledge. She kept both hands in her apron while the plates were carried past her. As she stood beneath his silence, she felt the damaged plate had been made into evidence against her.

Identify the words which suggest that Miriam is careful to avoid suspicion.
