Question 60

The toll-house cupboard

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

The fog had hidden the road since daybreak, and Mr Avery could hear the approaching wagons long before they reached his gate. He opened the cupboard beside the fireplace and took out a lantern and an iron key. After lighting the wick, he hung the lantern beneath the toll-house sign. The key remained cold in his hand as he crossed the yard to unlock the gate.

Give two objects Mr Avery takes out of the cupboard.
