Question 58

The delayed removal

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

By eight o’clock, every chair was covered and the last crate had been fastened. Mrs Orme waited in the bare parlour for the removal cart, listening for its wheels. Instead, rain swept across the road and hid the houses opposite. A servant brought word that the driver would not attempt the hill before noon. Mrs Orme opened the shutters again and placed her cup upon the sill where it had stood each morning for thirty years. The storm had lent the rooms back to her. She remained at the window, no longer listening for the cart.

Identify the phrase which shows that Mrs Orme regards the delay as briefly restoring her home to her.
