Question 46

At the clockmaker’s

An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.

Clara shouldered open the clockmaker’s door, keeping a paper-wrapped parcel tucked firmly beneath her arm. Her wet umbrella hung from one wrist. Behind the counter, shelves crowded with clocks ticked at different speeds. The clockmaker held out his hand for the parcel, but Clara drew it closer and asked whether they might speak privately.

Give one object Clara brings into the shop.
